Restaurants I must try

El Rio Grande- supposedly ripped off Ninfa's Menu, but the menu I see online is nothing like Ninfa's. However, they do have several tex-mex classics that aren't normally on an nyc menu.

Pinche Taqueria - supposedly awesome baja style fish tacos and at my subway stop for work.

Rodeo Bar- recommended by other texans and rumored to have Shiner.

La Esquina- recommended by a friend.

Arriba Arriba- recommended by a friend whose opinion on mexican food is held in high regard. Although truly, the san antonio food he prepares in his own apartment is probably superior to any restaurant.

Hill Country- I tried it, but I need to try brunch. I need to know that i'm not missing great migas, breakfast tacos, and cheese enchiladas. (wasn't impressed by their barbecue, but loved the mac n cheese and pb& j cupcakes)

anything else anyone's had that's decent texmex/southern/cajun/ textex?

i liked arriba arriba. i also want to try eclipse in sunset park. when i'm choosing a new mexican place, if it doesn't have refried beans on the menu, i don't go.

haha! There are places here that have refried beans?

Sometimes I'm just craving one segment of a combo plate..like a good taco, or a good enchilada, or something. I've given up on finding the whole combo here (except florencia 13 even though their beans could be better).

a few, yeah. i'm pretty sure ariba did! i just really hate black beans! eclipse has them on their menu so once i'm done with finals, i'm going to make the trip out there to try it out. want to come?

Sure, that's end of december, right?

I'm okay with black beans, though it is kind of weird with cheesy mexican food, unless they're refried black beans. Its weird that no one has charro beans either or serves the soupy black beans in a bowl like they do with charro beans.

haha its weird eclipse has tiramisu for dessert. I guess that and cheesecake are the desserts you have to have on every menu in nyc.

It looks like its affordable to eat there. Do you know what you want to try? There are a lot of things that sound good!

i usually test out the enchiladas on my first trip. i'm such a mexican food snob.

i'm usually a little scared to try the enchiladas, I try to glimpse around and see if anyone else has ordered them and what they look like. Same with nachos.

yeah, i'm ok with them if they're soupy but not when they're all dried out, just hanging out on the plate. no thanks. i hate when you go to a "texmex" place and they have them. black beans are not tex mex!!!!!

yeah, a week and a half and i'm DONE. until jan. =)

i have and thought it was good. it's VERY greasy, but i like grease usually. =) they supposedly have shiner behind the bar, but you have to ask for it and it's like $10 or something. the margaritas are good!

hmm. i've never tried asking them for shiner.
